Coulthard downplays Red Bull's pace
David Coulthard has warned against unrealistic expectations in the build-up to the new season after his team-mate Mark Webber set the pace at Jerez. Webber's 1:18.628 saw him lead the field of 16 on Wednesday at the Spanish circuit, prompting some suggestions that perhaps 2008 will be the season that sees Red Bull finally come good. However, Coulthard has played down these expectations, saying one shouldn't read too much into the times set during testing. "I've done lots of testing over the years and some of those tests have been fantastic and some of them have been shit," Coulthard told AAP. "I wouldn't read anything into it - I think that anyone who expects anything different than McLaren or Ferrari to be setting the pace at the beginning of the season, I would be extremely surprised.
Valley man may have deed to part of Las Lomas site
A California lawmaker and Los Angeles city officials are calling for an investigation into whether Las Lomas President Dan S. Palmer Jr. broke the law when he signed documents saying he owned all 555 acres he is seeking to develop into a mini-city near Santa Clarita. Los Angeles City Councilman Greig Smith and Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, R-Santa Clarita, said they are asking the state attorney general, state Department of Real Estate and Los Angeles County district attorney to investigate whether Palmer committed perjury or fraud. Their call follows a county Board of Supervisors vote Tuesday to look into who actually owns the land under the 5,553-home development proposed for the last swath of open space between Santa Clarita and the city of Los Angeles. Palmer signed county and city land-use applications saying he was the owner of the property.
Football: 10-year deal with Notre Dame is boon for UConn program
STORRS, Conn. — On this Valentine's Day, I think it's appropriate to share with you my love for rotund, globular football coaches and mystical little Irish guys in a crazy green outfit. Oh, you haven't heard? Then you haven't been reading outraged UConn fans on the Internet bemoaning a potential 10-game football series between UConn and Notre Dame. According to a leaked Notre Dame internal memo, the Fighting Irish and Huskies are finalizing a deal to play 10 games beginning in 2009, including five at Notre Dame Stadium, three at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro and two at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. I love this deal, despite the fact that none of the games will be played in Connecticut. Simply put, right now this is wonderful, even if it could be a disaster six or seven years from now.
Gono's reforms bring chaos in Zimbabwe
ZIMBABWE was plunged into complete pandemonium Tuesday, a day after Reserve Bank governor Gideon Gono rolled out new financial measures in response to the country's record inflation. Gono devalued Zimbabwe's currency by 60 percent and rolled out an ambitious plan to slash three zeros from the currency. New bank notes were released and will trade for the next three weeks alongside the existing bearer cheques which are being phased out on August 21. The redenomination of old notes, carried out more simultaneously with the introduction of a new array of 13 bank notes ranging from one cent to Z$100,000, closely following a major devaluation, left consumers, businesses and bankers alike in confusion. Economists downplayed the benefit of the currency redenomination, saying it would merely make life a bit easier for consumers overburdened with banknotes.
Racing: Germain Camrys test at Las Vegas
Two Germain Racing Toyota Camry machines were on the track at the Las Vegas Speedway on Wednesday. Nationwide Series drivers Todd Bodine (03) and Mike Wallace (7) both improved upon their morning test speeds in the afternoon session. In the early session, Bodine was 30th fastest (177.160) and Wallace was 34th (177.003). In the afternoon test, however, Bodine moved up to 20th best (178.986) and Wallace climbed to 23rd quickest at 17.619. Wallace is new with the Germain operation this season and plans to run a fulltime Nationwide Series (formerly Busch Series) schedule. Bodine has said his focus will remain primarily on the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and trying to win a second championship to add to the one he earned in 2006. *** It may be “winter" at the Immokalee Regional Raceway drag strip.
